The Police
No I'm not in trouble (again?) but I am fondly remembering the 1980's! As you've probably heard by now, The Police are touring again and have released a greatest hits type cd. When they were a new band I wasn't a huge fan, but over the years I've become quite fond of thier music.
There are many old favorites of mine on the new police cd, but I would have to say my best favorite from them is "Sprits in the Material World". Have you ever really listened to that song? The words are so true. So many of us are stuck in the world of material objects and a monetary sense of success.
The ability to reach into the heart of the matter is something rather unique to the Police. Most of thier songs are deeply philosphical--with the possible exception of Da do do dah or whatever that one was. Seriously though, Synchronicity and Walking on the Moon are quite philosphical. I think that is one of the things that set's them apart from other bands.
The Police have inspired others too. A whole generation of philosphic singers emply that raspy, forthright sound of the Police. The tenor sections of some songs adds dimension and there is a lot of that in today's music. We didn't know it then, but the Police have become a quite influential group in pop music.

Even in the world of downloading rather than buying, I'm going to have to purchase the police cd. It's got all my favorites and even a few I've never heard of. The press release says it is in celebration of 30 years. Can it possibly be 30 years? Even if it was just yesterday, the songs are timeless and a must have for casual listeners AND music collectors. There's never been a band just like the Police. I'm betting there won't ever be anyone in the future who can quite grasp and mimic that mix of jazz, punk, and reggae that comes from this band.
