Life beyond Google

My students will tell you, in my Genealogy course the thing that probably sticks with them the most is my constantly saying "Google is your friend".  I tell them that because sometimes they get so engrossed in looking at genealogy websites that they forget there might be other information available on other sites.

One of life's little inconveniences is advertising and Google certainly has it's share.  It even advertises it's advertisers on non-google websites.  It's quite the marketing network.  Speaking of marketing networks, read about Apogee .

Apogee was formed in 2001 and is a search engine marketing company. It's worldwide, but at home in Houston, Apogee focuses on a variety of proven online marketing methods that include paid search, natural search, affiliate marketing, and pay-per-call.  Affiliate marketing is the most fascinating for me.  Basically what this means is it advertises similar products on the page of your search.  If you are looking for used cars, for instance, on the search engine results page will be paid advertising from folks selling used cars or something related like insurance.  Absolutely brilliant, says I.

Admittedly, I'm not a marketing expert or even all that tech savvy.  So another kudo goes to Apogee for developing and posting a Search Engine Marketing Glossary.  This is a list of words and phrases connected to search engine marketing that you can click on to find the definition.  They often also include an opposite for comparison and a practical use example.  It's a great learning tool for newbies like me to become accustomed to the lingo.

So why do you need to know about Search Engine Marketing? Because more and more of us are trying out ways to make a few bucks online.  We're told it takes very little work and almost no investment and we'll make thousands.  We get dragged into pay per visit, pay per post, pay per whatever in the hopes of adding a little pocket change.  Then we build a website and add something like Google AdSense or Amazon.com or dozens of other links to try to make some money off the visitors to our blogs and such.  All this is marketing.  All this has a purpose--that being selling something.  And if you've got something to sell Apogee has one of the most honest ways of helping you choose how and where to sell it.

Ok maybe it's not for your family homepage.  Do you really want to market that?  But if you've got a product to sell you're going to want a professional marketomg strategy.  If you are the person in your company who thinks about these things and makes marketing choices, you seriously need to have a look at Apogee.  Internet advertising makes sense in today's world.  At least have a peek at the glossary page so you can hold up your end of a discussion!
